The demand for water is increasing, and continued growth of world population will push towards greater use of groundwater to satisfy this thirst.

But where to find this water? L’UNESCO, with the program of hydrogeological mapping of global resources (WHYMAP) has made this map, time to list all groundwater resources on the planet. This map will serve not only to understand how and where they will locate future water wars, but also to understand the subplot of the new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

The map blue areas are rich in groundwater resources, the green ones have discrete water while in the brown water is severely limited access, according to UNESCO:

The 70 percent of the water derived from aquifers exploited in the world are used by the European Union. They are often the only source of supply in the semi-desert areas (100% Saudi Arabia and Malta, 95% in Tunisia, and 75% in Morocco). L’irrigaziione in molti paesi avviene esclusivamente attraverso lo sfruttamento di acque provenienti da fonti sotterranee (90% in Libia, 89% in India, 84% in Sud Africa, e l’80% in Spagna).

Sebberne i sistemi acuiferi siano presenti in tutti i continenti, non tutti sono rinnovabili. Ad esempio quelli del Nord Africa e della penisola Araba, si sono formati oltre 10.000 anni fa in un clima molto più umido ma adesso non più rinnovabile.

Altre invece sono rinnovabili grazie alle piogge e al periodico scioglimento delle nevi. Ma una buona notizia per l’Africa c’è:

The aquifers , che sono tra le più grandi del mondo, sono al momento sottosfruttate. Essi hanno  un enormle potenziale a patto che vengano gestite in maniera sostenibile. Questa necessità deriva dal fatto che queste risorse si estendono in diversi stati, e questo necessita quindi di determinati accordi per la loro gestione e salvaguardia dall’inquinamento. Meccanismi di questo tipo hanno cominciato ad emergere negli ultimi anni.  Ad esempio nel 1990, il Ciad l’Egitto, l’arabia Libica, e il Sudan hanno istituito un authority per gestire il sistema acquifero Nubiano.
